Mike Nelson ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by West Funeral Home & Life Tribute Center - Casselton on Mar. 12, 2026.Michael "Mike" Lynn Nelson, 67, of Casselton, North Dakota, passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the love of his family and the faith that carried him every step of the way. Born on January 12, 1959, at St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo to Lynn and Nancy Nelson, Mike lived a life marked by kindness, humility, devotion, and a love that touched everyone who knew him.Mike grew up in Casselton, attending Central Cass Schools, where he formed lifelong friendships and learned the values of hard work and loyalty that would define him. He graduated in 1977 before earning his Accounting and Business degree from Interstate Business College in 1979. But long before diplomas, Mike had already found his true calling-farming. At just fourteen, he began working alongside his grandfather, Howard Nelson, and from that moment on, the farm became not just his career but the heart of his identity. In August of 1977, Mike's life changed with a simple phone call-one made from a business radio while helping his Uncle Roger. That call reached Pam Moderow, the woman who would become the love of his life. They married on September 22, 1979, and shared 46 years of unwavering partnership, friendship, and faith.Mike and Pam made homes first in Fargo, then Casselton, and finally on the farm -his sanctuary. He farmed with precision and pride, keeping an impeccably organized farm site where everything had a place and purpose. Mike's thoughtful nature extended to everything, especially farm machinery, which he studied with careful deliberation.Mike and Pam enjoyed endless hours mowing, maintaining, and perfecting even the smallest details of their farm. They loved riding together on the fourwheeler to check crops, sharing peaceful moments that needed no words.Mike and Pam's marriage was built on daily devotion; Mike never missed calling Pam, not once, from the day they started dating. Their love was gentle, constant, standing side by side, hand in hand, with daily "I love you's" that never faded. As cancer treatments grew longer and hospital stays became more frequent, Pam was always there with open arms, and Mike would tell her, "I get another day with you, and I'm so happy to have you with me today." Their love for one another never wavered, even in the hardest moments.Mike served his community with that same commitment. For 30+ years, he served on the Cass County Mutual Board; for six years, he served as President and Board Member for Maple River Grain & Agronomy; Harmony Township Board Member and for over 50 years, he faithfully served at Casselton Westminster Presbyterian Church, starting at just age 19. In 1987, Casselton Jaycees honored him as Cass County Outstanding Farmer of the Year, a recognition he accepted with the humility that defined him.Mike was blessed with many friends, and he truly valued the people in his life who filled his days with good conversation and laughter. Some of his favorite things were his shop visits with neighbors and Wednesday "township meetings", simple traditions that brought him joy and gave him a chance to catch up, unwind, and stay connected. He was lucky to be surrounded by so many friends.Nothing made Mike prouder than his family. His three daughters-Amanda, Rachel, and Kayla-were his greatest joy andhelping them achieve their dreams and obtain college degrees remained one of his proudest accomplishments. Becoming "Bumpy" to his beloved grandchildren brought him immeasurable happiness. He followed their activities, celebrated their achievements, and treasured every moment spent with them. His children and grandchildren will forever miss his fried eggs, humor, empathy, pontoon rides, and hugs.Family memories were summers at Lake Eunice MN, holidays with loved ones, vacations in Florida, sunny days at their condo in Mesa AZ and quick trips to Brainerd with friends.Mike embodied the true character of a farmer-rooted in patience, perseverance, and passion. Farmers are known for their never give up attitude, the very trait that defines those who stay in the game for the long run. Mike lived his life that way, both in the field and through his battle with cancer, pushing through every challenge and setback with unwavering strength and quiet determination. Even during the hardest days of his illness, Mike longed to return to his farm shop-his place of peace. His resilience, determination, and faith were unwavering. He was a fighter in every sense but carried his fight with gentleness and grace.Mike will be remembered for his striking blue eyes, his warm heart, his unselfish nature, and his genuine gratitude, always thankful, even in hardship. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faithfulness, and quiet strength that will live on in every person who had the privilege of knowing him.Survived By:His loving wife: Pam Nelson, Casselton, NDDaughters: Amanda (Jim) Schauer - children Claire, Etta, and Leni, Littleton, CO, Rachel (Eric) Hansen - children Avery and Harper, Sioux Falls, SD, Kayla Nelson (Maxwell Gray) - Minneapolis, MNSister: Karen (Tim) Kensok, Lakewood Ranch, FLUncle: Roger Nelson, Casselton, NDAunt: Loree Jegtvig, Hawley, MNSister-in-law: Brenda Halverson (Jeff)- Littleton, COBrother-in-law: Douglas Moderow (Diane)- Fargo, NDPreceded in Death By:Parents: Lynn and Nancy NelsonParents-in-law: Duane and Mary Ann ModerowGrandparents: Howard and Georgine Nelson and Leon and Irene CockerillSpecial thank you from the Nelson family to Sanford oncologist Dr. Dan Almquist, Sanford Roger Maris oncology team, Sanford hospital and Sanford hospice care unit.Visitation: Monday, March 23, 2026 from 5 to 7 PM with prayer service 7 PM at Martin's Lutheran Church, Casselton.Celebration of Life: Tuesday, March 24 at 11 AM at Martin's Lutheran Church with visitation one hour prior.Interment: Casselton Cemetery.West Funeral Home & Life Tribute Centerwestfuneralhome.comMemorials may be directed to:The Peltier Lodge – Fargo Sanford Cancer Patient Lodge for Patient/Family Cancer Care – Donations can be sent online: sanfordhealthfoundation.org/peltierCommunity of Care – communityofcarend.com or PO Box 73, Casselton, ND 58012Westminster Presbyterian Church – wpcasselton.com or 242 - 6th Ave N, Casselton ND 58012To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Mike Nelson, please visit our floral store. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
