Preserve forever →Michael Robert "Mickey" Russo
Passed March 5, 2026
New York, NY
Michael “Mickey” Robert Russo passed away on March 5, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to Daniel and Sylvia Russo, he lived his entire life in the neighborhood he loved.
Mickey worked as a corrections officer, sanitation worker, and postman, yet none of these roles meant as much to him as his 40 years with the New York City Fire Department. He took special pride in serving aboard Marine 6, the fireboat that remained a favorite subject of his many stories.
When he was not on duty, Mickey was almost always traveling. He enjoyed trips to Cuba, Fire Island, Puerto Rico, Las Vegas, Aruba, Atlantic City, and countless Caribbean cruises, where he happily spent time shooting craps and sharing drinks with friends. In New York, he could usually be found at McSorley’s Old Ale House, where his Marine 6 fire helmet still hangs above the bar.
In his later years, Mickey was lovingly cared for by his niece Lisa and her husband Eddie, along with their sons Dan and Chris. He was also looked after by his niece Barbara and her husband Rich, his great-niece Kristin and her husband Matt, and his nephew Danny. He is survived by his sister Genevieve, many other nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of family and friends. He was predeceased by his sister Theresa, his brother Anthony, and his longtime companion Joyce.
Mickey will be remembered for his endless supply of stories and jokes, as well as a quiet generosity that touched the lives of countless people. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
