Garden City, MI
Michael P. Bingham, age 82, of Garden City, Michigan, passed away on March 7, 2026.
Born in Ravenna, Ohio, and raised in several places including Pine Grove Mills, Pennsylvania, Michael discovered Scouting early in life and earned the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 16. Though not a traditional student, he possessed a sharp and practical mind. He met his wife Marilyn while earning an Associate degree at Henry Ford Community College and later received an Automotive Technical Certification.
Michael enjoyed a long and successful career with Cadillac. Hired as a walk-in applicant—an uncommon occurrence—thanks to his distinguished record as an Eagle Scout, he advanced to the role of Associate Engineer before retiring in 1999. He remained deeply committed to his community, contributing to numerous civic efforts including the creation of Santa Land at the City Park, service on the City Zoning Board of Appeals, support for the Straight Farmhouse Museum, and active involvement in the many organizations and teams his children participated in, such as JROTC and various sports.
His dedication to Scouting defined much of his adult life. When his son reached the appropriate age, Michael founded a Tiger Cub den and remained involved with the pack and troop throughout his son’s youth. He continued his service with the troop until the day he passed. His most enduring volunteer legacy was at Camp Rotary, where he gave more than 35 years of service and was honored with the Silver Beaver Award, Scouting’s highest recognition for volunteers.
Michael was the beloved husband of Marilyn for 58 wonderful years. He was the cherished father of Marla (John) Bingham-Melcher, Kevin (April), and the late Lora, the respected grandfather of Finn and Nate, and the dear brother of Sue (Jere) Herr, Patricia, Sara (Ken) VanPortfliet, Thomas, and the late John. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
