Michael J. Chaffee

Michael J. Chaffee

December 16, 1957 March 13, 2026

Olean, NY

Michael J. Chaffee, 69, of Olean, passed away unexpectedly at his home on March 13, 2026. Born on February 16, 1957, in Olean, he was the son of William L. and Estelle A. Neporadny Chaffee. A lifelong resident of the Olean community, Michael attended local schools and built a career first with the Cattaraugus County Health Department in maintenance and groundskeeping, before becoming a self-employed contractor and skilled bricklayer. He took great pride in his craftsmanship and was widely known as a jack of all trades who was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need.

In his younger years, Michael was a talented fast-pitch baseball player who managed the Olean Royals for 20 years, contributing as a pitcher and second baseman in regional tournaments and earning mention in the sports pages of the Buffalo News. He was an avid fan of the Buffalo Bills, St. Bonaventure Bonnies, and New York Yankees. Michael also cherished collecting antiques, frequenting garage sales in search of unique items with history and character, and sharing his knowledge with others. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—sitting by a fire, sharing a Bud Light with family and friends, playing cards with his nephews, and trying his luck with scratch-offs. Those closest to him described him as a brother, friend, and confidant with a heart of gold, especially noting his strong bond with his brother Bobby.

Michael is survived by his brothers Billy Chaffee of Texas, Ron Chaffee of Oregon, and Bobby Chaffee of Olean; his sisters Patty Fox of Olean, Vanessa Tupper of Cuba, and Karen Matern of Olean; along with several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends. He was predeceased by his parents; his sisters Andrea Morgan and Susan Wojtonick; and his beloved nephew Mathew Chaffee.

He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, strong work ethic, and the quiet, meaningful presence he brought to the lives of those who knew him. His spirit will live on in the many hearts he touched.
