He was born in Hancock County, Indiana on December 20, 1939, to Chandis and Martha (Main) Wells of Charlottesville. Melvin graduated from Charlottesville High School in 1958. He served in the United States Army from 1961-1964. He married Sue (Harding) Wells on January 11, 1975.Melvin worked for Delco Remy in Anderson for thirty-four and a half years before retiring. He enjoyed serving as a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Greenfield. Melvin was born on a farm and loved farming, toy trains, and spending time with family and friends.He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sue Wells of Greenfield; children, Jason W. (Michelle) Wells of Gloucester, VA and Andrea S. Wells (John) Ketenbrink of Jeffersonville, IN; grandchildren, Aidan and Lucas Wells of Virginia, Haley, Rachel, and Logan of Jeffersonville, IN; brothers, Carl (Connie) Wells of Middletown and Raymond (Judie) Wells of Greenfield. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chandis and Martha Wells; and sisters, Lavonne Miller and Marilyn Bishop.We would like to thank the nursing staff at Springhurst Health Campus and IU Health Hospice staff for their support for our family.Visitation will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held immediately following visitation at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Roger Kinion will be officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made by mail to the Calvary Baptist Church, 1450 W. Main St., Greenfield, IN 46140, or by website at https://cbcgreenfield.org/.
