Port Hadlock, WA

Melvin Arthur Hadley, 85, of Port Hadlock, Washington, passed away on February 26, 2026. Born on May 24, 1940, in Star, Idaho, to Harold A. and Bertha Mae (Walton) Hadley, he was the second of five children. Melvin grew up on the family farm in Star, where crops and dairy cows were raised. He attended schools in Star, Eagle, and Meridian, developing a lifelong passion for Big Band jazz and becoming an accomplished cornet player. He graduated from Meridian High School in 1958 and went on to attend George Fox College in Newberg, Oregon, where he met Lyla Beth Bury, who became the love of his life. They married on August 12, 1960, at Star Friends Church.

After farming for several years, Melvin joined the Boise Fire Department in October 1964. During his 26-year career, he advanced to the rank of Captain, served at multiple stations including the airport, and spent his final six years as Fire Department Chaplain. A man of deep faith, he remained active in church leadership, Bible study groups, and various ministries throughout his life. Following his retirement, Melvin and Lyla fulfilled a long-held dream by serving for ten years with American Missionary Fellowship (AMF/InFaith) across the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas of Washington. They led camps, Vacation Bible Schools, and outreach ministries in rural communities. The couple later settled in Port Hadlock, where they continued their service at Quilcene Bible Church. Together they enjoyed traveling, camping, and visiting family across the United States and beyond.

Melvin and Lyla shared 64 years of marriage before her passing in December 2024. He is survived by his children John Gordon Hadley (Catherine), Marybeth Iverson, Ronald Hadley (Sharon), Susan Rose (James), and Ruth Anderson (daughter by choice); 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his siblings Floyd Hadley (Sharon), Warren Hadley (Laura), and Margaret Hiskey (Sam); and many extended family members.
