February 7, 1978— March 12, 2026
Asheville, NC
Melinda Gale Riveiro, born Melinda Gale Elingburg on February 7, 1978, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, passed away on March 12, 2026. A gentle and curious soul from the beginning, she was raised by her parents, Jan and Rick Elingburg, who nurtured her love for songs, yellow flowers, paint, exploration, and the world around her.
Melinda earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Linguistics from NC State University. She traveled widely, whether through books that carried her across centuries or journeys by plane and train through Europe and across North Carolina from the mountains to the coast. Possessed of a brilliant mind and many talents, she was known for her quiet humility, never believing herself to be special despite the countless lives she touched. She defended and cared for others with equal parts tenderness and strength, offering gentle comfort or fierce protection as needed.
Above all, Melinda was a devoted mother to her son, Raymond. She approached parenting with childlike curiosity, blending academic insight with joyful wonder. When Raymond developed an interest in Star Wars, she immersed herself in it alongside him, embracing whatever brought happiness to those she loved. She was also a cherished wife to Greg Riveiro, a loving daughter, sister to Greg Elingburg, aunt to Miles, and a steadfast friend and advocate to many.
She is survived by her son, Raymond; her spouse, Greg Riveiro; her parents, Rick and Jan Elingburg; her brother, Greg Elingburg, and his wife, Claire, and their son, Miles; as well as her cousins, aunts, uncles, special Grammy Pammy and Uncle Tom, her godchildren Henri, Amèlie, and Jack Rèmy Orrand, dear friends Cristel Orrand and Kent Dezendorf, and countless others, including the many children at Bruce Drysdale Elementary School who affectionately called her “Mango.”
