Mavis Smith ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home - Atchison on Mar. 16, 2026.Mavis Ann Smith, age 86, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, March 20, 2026, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens in Atchison, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to final expenses and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.Born on June 8, 1939, in Garrison, North Dakota, Mavis was the daughter of Herbert Hall and Violet Whitcomb. She spent much of her life working as a waitress, including at Melrose and Perkins, and sold AVON products. Mavis was a member of Riverside Baptist Church in St. Joseph, Missouri. She enjoyed quilting, playing card games such as Skipo, and working on puzzles and crossword puzzles.Mavis married Donald E. Smith, Sr., and they later divorced. She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Maddox of Atchison, Kansas; her son, Wendall Smith and his wife Kim of Atchison, Kansas; her son, Marty Smith; her brother, Duane Hall of Kansas City, Kansas; her sisters, Sherry Heckman of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Carol Schlereth of Atchison, Kansas; thirteen grandchildren; and twenty-three great-grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents, three sons, Donald Smith, Jr., Robbie Smith and Terry Smith, a sister, Mable Wright and a honorary daughter Scarlet Walker.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
