Mary Susan Hannigan, age 78, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia, surrounded by her loving family after a sudden illness.
Born in Lake City, Florida, Mary grew up in Macclenny, Florida. She shared 44 years of marriage with the late William James Hannigan. For fifty years she made Liberty County, Georgia her home, where she worked as a secretary for the Department of Defense and remained a devoted member of Hinesville First United Methodist Church. In October 2024, she moved to Aiken, South Carolina to be closer to her family.
She will be fondly remembered for her loving and kind nature, her joyful spirit, and her special gift for bringing laughter to those around her. Above all, she treasured her roles as a mother and grandmother.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Abbott (Grason) of Aiken, South Carolina; her son, Bill Hannigan (April) of Calhoun, Georgia; eight grandchildren, Daniel Pilon (Brynna), Nicole Hartley (Colton), Brandon Abbott, Jeromy Abbott (Jaselyn), Emily Havens (Derek), Joy James (Zach), Ember Hannigan, and Nathan Hannigan; eight great-grandchildren; and her sister, Jane Nagle Tucker of Moultrie, Georgia. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William B. Nagle, Jr.
