Mary Rosalie Blanchard

Mary Rosalie Blanchard

July 11, 1933 March 8, 2026

Sullivan's Island, SC

Mary Rosalie Blanchard of Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, at the age of 92. A lifelong resident of the island, she was the sixth generation of her family to call Sullivan’s Island home.

Born in Charleston on July 11, 1933, to John Blanchard, Sr. and Rosalie Blanchard, Mary was the eldest of five children. She remained deeply devoted to her siblings, John, Agnes, Sophie, and her youngest brother, Gene, throughout her life.

Mary’s lifelong love of learning led her to graduate magna cum laude from Bishop England High School and to pursue studies at the College of Charleston, College of Misericordia, and The Citadel, where she earned her master’s degree. Known affectionately as “Aunt Mary,” she spent many years tutoring generations of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews in English, Latin, French, and algebra. She remained active in her sorority, Phi Mu, for many years.

She cherished the rhythms of life on Sullivan’s Island, often seen driving her golf cart around the island, sharing beach picnics and lunches with family and friends, especially during holidays. She delighted in taking her nieces and nephews for rides along the shore, gently watching over them with her familiar reminder, “Don’t go past your knees!”

Mary is survived by her beloved brothers, John and Gene (June), their families, and a large extended family of nieces and nephews, as well as the many students whose lives she touched through her patient encouragement and guidance. Her family is grateful for the compassionate care she received at Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Retirement Community, particularly from her devoted helper, Trinity, who brought comfort and joy to her final years.
