Mary Lynch

Mary Lynch

August 20, 1934 March 9, 2026

East Rockaway, NY

Mary Lynch, 91, passed away peacefully at her home on March 9, 2026, with her beloved husband John by her side.

Born in Astoria, Queens in 1934 to Irish immigrant parents Catherine Thornton (née Burke) and John Thornton, Mary grew up with her older brother Vinny, younger sister Catherine, and youngest brother John. A bright and vivacious student known affectionately as “Thorny,” she attended Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School on scholarship before pursuing her nursing education at Mary Immaculate School of Nursing in Jamaica, Queens. It was there, at nineteen, that she met John on New Year’s Eve, beginning a love story that would last a lifetime. They married at St. Joseph’s in Astoria in April 1956 during a spring snowstorm and went on to welcome seven children: Michael, Maureen, Bernadette, Annie, David, Katie, and Terry. The couple joyfully celebrated seventy years of marriage in February with a special Mass and renewal of vows.

Mary and John left Queens for Lynbrook before settling into their longtime home on Denton Avenue in East Rockaway, where she raised their family and formed lifelong bonds with neighbors who became like family, including the Nelsons and the Lynchs. A devoted mother, she paused her nursing career to care for her children before returning to the profession, first in internal medicine and later specializing in gastroenterology. Her Catholic faith remained the cornerstone of her life; she was an active member of St. Raymond’s Parish for more than sixty years, later serving as a Eucharistic minister, in the Sodality, and in the Ministry of Consolation.

Mary found her greatest joy as a grandmother to twelve grandchildren—Oliver, Owen, Sean, Brendan, Daniel, Jordan, Katie, Julia, Leanna, Cecilia, Madeline, and John—and five great-grandchildren: Kingsley, Milo, Wells, Finley, and Sloane, with a sixth expected in August. She was also a beloved bonus grandmother to many neighborhood children. Her Irish heritage was a constant source of pride; she cherished summers in Foxford, County Mayo, perfected her mother’s soda bread recipe, and filled her home with Irish music, traditions, and legendary St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

She is survived by her husband John, her children and their families, and a wide circle of friends she considered family. Mary was reunited in death with her daughter Katie, her parents Catherine and John, her brother Rev. Michael Vincent Thornton, C.M., her sister Catherine Thornton, O.P., her mother-in-law Mary Lynch, and dear friends Betty and Patsy. She will be remembered for her tenacity, generosity, loyalty, intelligence, style, and unwavering dedication to easing the burdens and sharing the joys of others.
