October 30, 1937— March 6, 2026
Louisville, KY
Mary Joyce Schmalz, known to everyone who loved her as Joyce, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on October 30, 1937, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Frank and Willetta English, she was a lifelong member of St. Michael Catholic Church.
To her family, she was simply their mom, a woman whose strength, determination, and love shaped generations. She centered her life around her six children, always placing them first and ensuring they never wanted for anything. Through quiet sacrifice and steady wisdom, she taught them the value of hard work, creativity, and perseverance, often reminding them, “You can do anything you set your mind to.” Her encouragement came with both gentle comfort and the firmness needed to help them grow, and she had a remarkable way of making each child and grandchild feel uniquely loved and valued.
After years devoted to raising her family as a homemaker, Joyce worked as a secretary for the Jefferson County Circuit Clerk. She found joy in creating beautiful wreaths and crafts, many of which she donated to the Little Sisters of the Poor. She cherished her longtime friendships, especially those with her dear Florida friends and her beloved classmates from the Class of 1955.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Schmalz; and two children, Kimberly Joan Bedingfield (Kent) and Patrick Mackin. She is survived by her children Cynthia Byrd (Wayne), Danny Mackin (Karen), Kevin Mackin (Rhonda), and Shawn Neal (Tim), along with 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Her quiet faith, enduring love, and the values she lived by will continue to guide her family for generations to come.
