Groves, TX
Mary Elizabeth Hutton Roberts, a cherished friend, dedicated educator, and beloved member of her church family, passed away on March 8, 2026, at the age of 80 in Groves, Texas. Born on April 16, 1945, in Alexandria, Louisiana, she devoted her life to teaching and to serving God, touching the lives of countless students and fellow church members through her kindness and commitment.
A graduate of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, with a B.A., and Illinois Wesleyan University with a Master of Music, Mary was known for her beautiful piano playing and soothing singing voice. Music was central to her life and ministry. She could sight-read anything and played a vital role in the music program at her church, using her talents to bring joy, encouragement, and Christian fellowship to those around her.
Together with her husband Jimmy, she spent many years traveling in an RV and serving in Lay Renewal ministry at Baptist churches across east Texas and Louisiana. In her later years she was a devoted member of Val Verde Baptist Church. Mary possessed a strong, often mischievous spirit, a sharp sense of humor, and a generous heart that led her to help anyone in need. She took special pride in mentoring several pastors and music directors, offering them wisdom and steadfast support.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Earl “Jimmy” Roberts, Sr., and her parents, Judson and Hazel Hutton. Mary is survived by her nieces Kathy Craig, Kelle O’Connor, Kristi Blancaflor, and Kim Williamson, who will carry forward her legacy of love, kindness, and faithful service.
