Mary Elise Caruso (Breuer), age 89, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Born on February 20, 1937, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Harold and Elizabeth Mary Breuer (McCulkin), Mary moved at a young age to Sackets Harbor, New York. She graduated as valedictorian of her high school class and went on to earn her undergraduate degree from Le Moyne College. On July 2, 1960, she married Enrico J. Caruso after being introduced by friends. The couple made their home in Corning, New York, where they raised their six children and built a life centered on faith, friendship, and community. In retirement they spent winters in Florida before relocating to Cincinnati in 2021 to be closer to family.
Mary first devoted herself to raising her family before beginning a career as a middle school math teacher. She taught for more than twenty years, helping students gain confidence in their abilities. A lifelong learner who always had a book in hand, she possessed remarkable trivia knowledge and won her local radio trivia contest several times. She enjoyed conversation, sharing what she was reading, and bringing her humor and curiosity to time spent with family and friends. After retiring, she remained active in the Retired Teachers Association and often spent time at her husband’s shoe repair shop, greeting customers and occasionally helping out.
Her Catholic faith remained a steady foundation throughout her life. She loved reading, gathering with family, playing Euchre, and was known for her sauce and meatballs, learned the Italian way from her mother-in-law. Family memories include long road trips to Myrtle Beach filled with laughter and games of “Bizz-Buzz.” Even in her later years, as dementia gradually limited her ability to communicate, her warm smile endured and her love of children remained evident as she watched them with quiet joy during outings.
Mary is survived by her husband of 65 years, Enrico J. Caruso; their children, Joseph E. Caruso and wife Pamela of Havre de Grace, Maryland, Thomas A. Caruso and wife Deb of Wilmington, North Carolina, Enrico J. Caruso of Corning, New York, Peter J. Caruso of Lakewood Ranch, Florida, Anthony J. Caruso of Washington, D.C., and Elise Caruso Foster and husband Chad Foster of Cincinnati, Ohio; and grandchildren Julie Caruso and wife Victoria of Buffalo, New York, Devin Caruso of Buffalo, New York, Cailyn Brown and husband Chad of Sarasota, Florida, Christopher Caruso of Big Sky, Montana, and Claire Foster of Cincinnati, Ohio. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Dorothy (Breuer) Pagel, her brother Harold “John” Breuer, and her childhood dog, Puddles.
