Mary Elaine Shaw, 99, of Muncie, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.
Born on April 5, 1926, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Earl H. and Marie D. (Lamy) Goodrich. She graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1944 and attended Berkshire Community College and North Adams State College. On June 16, 1946, she married Milton I. Shaw at St. Mary Catholic Church in San Francisco, California.
Elaine worked for the Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts, at Notre Dame Parochial School for eleven years until her retirement in 1974. While living in Pittsfield, she was an active member of Notre Dame Catholic Church and belonged to the Berkshire Museum Camera Club, Greylock Mineral Club, and Connecticut Valley Mineral Club. She also volunteered with Elder Services. After moving to Muncie, she was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Legion of Mary, St. Mary Women’s Association, the Daughters of Isabella, and the Red Hat Society at Heritage Village in Yorktown. She found great pleasure in photography, mineralogy, crossword puzzles, reading, Trivial Pursuit, and Bingo. Above all, her greatest joy was spending time with her great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Michael G. Shaw (wife, Laura) of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Cynthia T. Nemser-Hall of Muncie; four grandchildren, Jeremy Nemser (wife, Kimberly) of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Rachel Bacon (husband, Samuel) of Indianapolis, Kathryn Nash of Edmond, Oklahoma, and David Shaw (wife, Alicia) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; six great-grandchildren, Delilah, Vivian, Cadence, Evelyn, Clare, and Isaac Jude; two nieces, Renee Schneider and Terri Durlack; and two nephews, Matt Goodrich and Andre Goodrich. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Milton I. Shaw, on February 11, 2004; her parents; her brother, Charles E. Goodrich; and two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Ray and August Milton.
