Garden City, KS
Mary Darlene Horner, 89, of Garden City, Kansas, passed away on March 14, 2026, at Garden Valley Retirement Village.
Born on December 28, 1936, in Garden City to Dean Martin and Birdie Dolla (Scholfield) Bowen, Mary graduated from Garden City High School in 1955. That same summer she met George Horner at church camp, and they married on November 25, 1955, in Clayton, New Mexico. The couple spent most of their married life on the family farm, where they raised their five children: David, Paul, Ruby, Tim, and Irma.
Her deep faith in Jesus was the center of Mary’s life. A devoted member of First Assembly of God, she served in many capacities, including Sunday School teacher, Bible School leader, board member, secretary, and Willing Worker. She especially cherished teaching her Sunday School class, taking the children on special outings after they learned their memory verses, and rejoicing when they accepted Christ. Mary also served as a Cub Scout den mother and helped coach Little League baseball. She found her greatest joy as a prayer warrior, witnessing many miracles and answers to prayer, and lived daily by her favorite verse, Proverbs 3:5-6.
Mary was actively involved in her children’s school activities and enjoyed sports, gardening, flowers, fishing, writing skits, and spending time with family and friends. She is survived by her sons Dave (Lola) Horner of Lakin, Kansas, Paul (Rachael) Horner of Salina, Kansas, and Tim Horner of Lakin, Kansas; her daughters Ruby (Kevin) Ivey of Garden City, Kansas, and Irma (Del) Kahre of Pueblo West, Colorado; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; her sisters Chalcia Ellen Hubbard of Amarillo, Texas, and Cheryl Martin of Grand Junction, Colorado; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She was preceded in death by her husband George, who died on June 23, 2005; her parents; her brothers Clyde, Art, Ray, Dwane, LeRoy, and Billy Dean; and her granddaughter Jenifer Michele Horner.
