Mary Soudant ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Barrett Leber Funeral Home - Tenafly on Mar. 16, 2026.Mary Anne Soudant, 89, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.Born on July 11, 1936, in Sacramento, California, Mary Anne attended Sacred Heart boarding school in Atherton, California. She later attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she was an active member of the Tri Delta Sorority, before completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco. After graduating, she embarked on a six-month journey through Europe with close friends, a testament to her adventurous spirit and lifelong curiosity about the world. Following her travels, she moved to New York City, where she enjoyed the arts, attending plays, musicals, ballet, and opera, and exploring museums whenever possible. Her interest in the arts continued throughout her life.Mary Anne began her career as a public health nurse in Sacramento, providing care and support to families in her community. She later continued her nursing career in New York City as the company nurse for Standard Oil in Rockefeller Center. During this time, she met her future husband, Bob Soudant, at a social gathering. After several years of courtship, they were married on August 28, 1965, in Sacramento, California.Following a honeymoon in Europe, they settled in Brooklyn, New York, where they began building their family, beginning with the birth of their daughter Elizabeth, followed by Therese. On their fifth wedding anniversary, twins Matthew and Danielle were born. Soon after, the family moved to Cresskill, New Jersey, where they raised their children. A few years later, Brian was born, completing their family of seven.After taking time away from work while raising her young children, Mary Anne returned to nursing once her children were a little older. She served for many years as a public health nurse in Cresskill and later in Englewood, New Jersey, where she continued caring for members of the community until her retirement. Mary Anne and Bob shared a loving marriage of 60 years, sustained by love, companionship, and a deep commitment to their family.Mary Anne was a devoted mother to her five children: Elizabeth Soudant and her husband, Eugene Constan; Therese Soudant and her husband, Brock Bullard; Danielle Flynn and her husband, Dan Flynn; Matthew Soudant; and Brian Soudant and his wife, Joy Soudant. She was also a proud and loving grandmother to Madeline, Riley, and Samantha Flynn; Megan and Dylan Bullard; Sofia Constan; and Jack Soudant.Mary Anne enjoyed an active social life. A lifelong tennis player, she especially loved playing at the Tenafly Tennis Club, where she formed many lasting friendships on and off the court. In her later years, she looked forward to her weekly bridge games, which she played with great enjoyment. For the past 20 years, Mary Anne and Bob spent their winters in Jupiter, Florida, where they built a wonderful circle of friends and especially treasured the times when their children and grandchildren came to visit.She is also survived by her siblings, Hermann Lorenz and sister-in-law Alberta Lorenz; Daniel Lorenz; and her sister, Therese Noonan and her husband, Mike Noonan; her sister-in-laws, Ann Soudant and Kate Soudant; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, including Margaret Lorenz, Dr. Peter Lorenz, Chris Lorenz, John Lorenz, Patrick Noonan, Tommy Noonan, Joseph Noonan, Lissette Morris, Chantal Soudant, and Jethro Soudant.Mary Anne was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Hermann and Nancy Lorenz; her father- and mother-in-law, Leon and Betty Soudant; and her brothers-in-law, Raymond Soudant and Michael Soudant, and sister-in-law Joyce Soudant.Mary Anne will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and quiet strength. As a mother, she was deeply accepting and supportive, always there for her children through both joyful moments and difficult times. She had a gentle spirit, a caring heart, and a deep love for her family that shaped her life. Her presence brought comfort and joy to those around her, and her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched.Her family will forever cherish the love, wisdom, and compassion she shared throughout her life.Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 19, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Barrett Funeral Home in Tenafly, New Jersey. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 20, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Therese of Liseux Church in Cresskill, New Jersey.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
