Marty Dale Not Afraid

Marty Dale Not Afraid was born to Candace and Wayne F. Not Afraid on December 4, 1967, and passed away surrounded by family on March 12, 2026. Given the Crow name Akawasskalaassaash, meaning One Who Never Gives Up, by Kenneth Pretty On Top, he belonged to the Whistling Water Clan and was a child of the Newly Made Lodge Clan.

A proud graduate of Lodge Grass High School in 1986, Marty qualified as a freshman for the National High School Finals Rodeo in team roping with George Cummins. He continued his education on rodeo scholarships at Northwest College and Dawson Community College, graduating from Dawson in 1989. Raised in a ranching and rodeo family, he dedicated his life to working with cattle, breaking and training horses, and competing in the arena. Known as one of the top tie-down ropers on the Indian Rodeo circuit, he also excelled in team roping. Marty traveled extensively across the United States, qualifying for numerous finals in both professional and Indian rodeo associations, including multiple appearances at the Indian National Rodeo in calf roping and the Montana Circuit Finals. He took special pride in his recent win at the Crow Bred Futurity aboard his horse Kyra Loves Kate.

Marty was happiest outdoors, whether on horseback or spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He made sure the children always had horses to ride and faithfully took them to youth rodeos. A devoted Dallas Cowboys fan, he also cherished quiet moments at home with his loyal dog, Fluffy.

He married Marion Calvin in Sheridan, Wyoming, and together they raised four children on the family ranch in Owl Creek outside Lodge Grass, Montana. Marty is survived by his wife, Marion; his children, Cara (George), Lacey (Beau), Wyatt, and Courtney Not Afraid; adopted daughters, Mackayla and Serese (Dale) Jefferson; his mother, Candace Pease; his sisters, Kimberly Not Afraid, Julie (George) Cummins, Michelle (Alfred) Armajo, Danielle (Rick) Hyatt, April (Cameron) Toineeta, Alta (Delano) White Clay, and Lisa Day Child; his brothers, Jeremy (Roxanne), Mike (Lori) Not Afraid, and Franklin Cooper; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, including Skylar, Kyra, Broden, Austyn, Kenzyn, Dylan, Dakota, Nate, Rio, Tobi, Koy, Cade, Tate, Taycee, Lainey, Rhett, Tessa, Dee, Jullian, Dale, and Logan. He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne F. Not Afraid; his adopted parents, Cyril and Flora Not Afraid; his stepson, Phillip Calvin; his infant sister, Hailey Marie; his grandson, Phoenix Amyotte; his brother, Randy; and several other dear family members.
