Martha Elizabeth Carter

Martha Elizabeth “Betty” Carter, 83, of Divernon, passed away on March 11, 2026, in Springfield. Born on January 13, 1943, in Carlinville, she was the daughter of Jonas and Dorothy Nichols Baker.

Betty married Gary D. Carter, Sr. on June 23, 1962. He preceded her in death on April 29, 2022, as did her parents, her son Richard Wade Carter, and her sisters Barb Baker and Patricia Trueblood.

For many years Betty served as Postmaster and later owned and operated Betty’s Ceramics and Betty’s Antiques in Divernon. She remained deeply involved in her community, participating in the Divernon Alumni Association and serving on the Divernon Village Board. She also devoted countless hours to researching and preserving her family ancestry and building her family tree.

She is survived by her sons Gary (Jaimee) Carter, Jr. and Eric (Mary) Carter, her daughter-in-law Jodi Carter, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
