Martha Ann Suazo

Martha Ann Suazo

October 7, 1942 February 11, 2026

Taos Pueblo, NM

Martha Ann Suazo, born and raised at Taos Pueblo, lived a life of quiet strength and generous service to her family and community. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she graduated from Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas, and married Gilbert Suazo, former governor of Taos Pueblo. Together they raised five children—daughter Reva Ann and sons Gilbert Jr., Daniel Victor, Terrence Lee, and Alfred Antone—born over a span of nine years. Early in their marriage, Martha worked as a waitress and seamstress before devoting herself fully to raising her family while honoring the traditional role of women in Taos Pueblo life.

As her children grew, Martha extended her care beyond the home. Deeply guided by her faith, she became a catechist, teaching the teachings of Jesus Christ to prepare young children for First Holy Communion at the Taos Day School alongside Rose Cordova and Lorraine Martinez. She later served as a teacher’s aide in the Taos Municipal Schools, where her strict yet friendly manner earned the respect and affection of her students. Martha’s spiritual commitment led her to join the Guadalupanas, where she participated in annual pilgrimages to the Santuario de Chimayo on Mother’s Day and walked the 100-mile pilgrimages dedicated to vocations. Over the years she completed these journeys from all four directions across New Mexico, later supporting fellow pilgrims as a truck driver transporting their gear. She also took part in the Good Friday pilgrimage to the Talpa Morada, recited the Holy Rosary, and circulated the Holy Family Shrine among Taos Pueblo families. In 1987 she was chosen as a delegate to welcome Pope John Paul II during his visit to Phoenix, Arizona.

Martha’s warmth and steady presence touched many lives. She hosted countless friends and visitors during feast days, and her renowned red chili was a favorite. Her cheerful “Good Morning everybody!” greeting each Sunday at St. Jerome Church will long be remembered. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Gilbert Suazo Sr., her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and siblings Reycita Suazo and family of Denver, Colorado, Lucy Archuleta and family, and Antonia Sa.
