July 30, 1943— March 7, 2026
Magnolia, DE
Marlyn Louise Barr, born on July 30, 1943, in Dover, Delaware, to James and Stella Bishop, passed away on March 7, 2026, after an extended hospital stay. She grew up as the devoted big sister to Janet Durham and Joan Bishop, cherishing childhood memories with her grandmother, sewing her own clothes, and the excitement of her father bringing home the neighborhood’s first television.
In high school, Marlyn met the love of her life, George R. Barr Jr., and they married on May 5, 1962. Together they built a home and family in Magnolia, where they gardened, volunteered with the Magnolia Fire Company, and lent a helping hand to neighbors. She embraced George’s parents, George R. Barr Sr. and Hilda Mann Barr, as her own.
Marlyn is survived by her daughters, Pamela C. Barr of Smyrna and Joanne L. Donovan (Terry) of Felton; her beloved granddaughters, Brittney A. Walker, Lauren A. Williams (Joseph), and Kelly G. Barr; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Jameson A. Walker, Adeline R. Walker, Joshua C. Williams, and Lucas A. Williams. She also leaves behind extended family members and many dear friends whose company she treasured.
A woman of deep and abiding faith, Marlyn accepted Jesus as her Savior at a young age and became a member of Faith Community Church in 1966. She faithfully taught Sunday school to four- and five-year-olds for 42 years, formed lasting bonds with families through cards, meals, prayers, and support, and served in numerous ministries including the nursery, Operation Christmas Child, and the Prime Timers. She found great joy in singing worship songs and sharing life with her church family.
Throughout her life, Marlyn worked at Libby’s Cannery, ran an in-home daycare, and retired as a rural postal carrier for the United States Postal Service. In retirement she remained active in church, the Ladies Auxiliary, and family life. She and George volunteered together at the Magnolia Fire Company, both earning life membership. Known for her warm smile, generous spirit, and love of cooking, she passed down treasured recipes for vegetable beef soup, yeast rolls, strawberry jam, and many other family favorites. Her handwritten cards filled with x’s and o’s, her laughter during games and dinners, and her constant readiness to offer a smile, a listening ear, or a prayer will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
