September 13, 1955— March 9, 2026
Cherokee, IA
Mark Whitfield Adamson of Cherokee, Iowa, was called home to Jesus, his Lord and Savior, on Monday, March 9, 2025, after a brief illness.
Born to Darrell and Phyllis (Everly) Adamson on September 13, 1955, in Cherokee, Mark graduated from Cherokee Washington High School in 1974. He pursued undergraduate studies at George Fox College in Newberg, Oregon, South Dakota State University in Brookings, and completed his degree at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. A gifted distance runner, he was known for training 14 to 20 miles daily during high school, earning the nickname “Mr. Dedication.” He became a NAIA All-American in the marathon and once held a world record in the 4-man 24-hour relay.
Though Mark cherished running, his deepest passion was his faith in Jesus Christ. He was an active participant in Fellowship of Christian Athletes camps, serving as a huddle leader. Those who knew him will remember his genuine interest in people, both friends and strangers alike, along with his twinkling eyes, easy smile, and steady words of encouragement. As one nephew recalled, Mark had a remarkable way of lifting others up, leaving every conversation feeling more positive and believing more fully in oneself.
Mark was self-employed for most of his adult life, dividing his time between Newberg, Oregon, and Cherokee, Iowa. He is survived by his sisters, Sharman Wirtzfeld (Dieter) and Heidi O’Connor (Tom), and his brothers, Blaine Adamson (Audrey) and Bruce Adamson (Julie), along with many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Darrell Duane Adamson, his mothers, Phyllis June (Everly) Adamson and Juanita June (Manlove) Adamson, and four sets of grandparents.
