Marjorie Ann Hurst

Marjorie Ann Hurst, 81, of Newport, passed away on March 12, 2026. Many who attended Newport Grammar School will remember her fondly as the beloved “lunch lady” and later as a first-grade teaching assistant. She also worked alongside her husband for many years helping to run City Park Grocery. Those who knew Marjorie quickly grew to love her warm and caring spirit, and she will be deeply missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Irene Hux, her brother H.C. Hux, her sister Diane Lindsey, her daughter Jada Hurst, and her grandmother Birtie Freshour.

Marjorie is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bob Hurst; her son and daughter-in-law, Benton and Kim Hurst; her grandchildren, Amelia and Jacob Harrison, and Colby and Erin Hurst; and her beloved sister, Rhonda Palmer, and brother-in-law, Gary Palmer. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caring professionals at Newport Medical Center, Wellington, Jefferson Park, Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice, and to Brenda Smith for their support throughout her journey. They are especially grateful to Skylar Proffitt, whose devoted care and affection for Marjorie meant the world to the entire family.
