Marie Swartz

May 16, 1934 March 6, 2026

Glen Ellyn, IL

Marie Swartz, a proud matriarch, dedicated healthcare professional, and beloved friend, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, joining her husband James. Born on May 16, 1934, in Elmwood Park, Illinois, she was the eldest daughter of Elizabeth (Betty) Kowalkowski and Walter (Wally) Behrns, who instilled in her the values of compassion and resilience that guided her throughout her life.

Marie was a source of strength and warmth for her family. Predeceased by her devoted husband James and her sisters Patricia and Betty Lou, she is survived by her children, Wendy Kotsakis, James (Maria) Swartz, Melody Swartz, and Daniel (Kelly) Swartz, along with her ten grandchildren—Corey (Alison) and Kyler Kotsakis; Iliana, Kyra, Tristan, and Jaron Swartz; Parker (Annie), Ryan, and Gavin Swartz; and Benjamin Hubbell—and her great-grandchildren, James, Bridget, and Thomas Kotsakis. Her family was the center of her world, and she embraced her roles as mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother with deep enthusiasm, finding joy in their laughter and love.

She married James Swartz on June 7, 1963, and their 56-year union was filled with love and shared dreams. The couple made their home in Glen Ellyn, where they became beloved figures in the community, often seen driving their white Checker Marathon to school events and sporting activities in support of their children and later their grandchildren.

Marie graduated from Morton High School and St. Luke’s Hospital School of X-Ray Technology. She enjoyed a 45-year career as an X-ray technician, touching many lives through her commitment and kindness. An active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Glen Ellyn since 1974, she volunteered as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and served as a crossing guard, room mother, and picture lady at Abraham Lincoln School. Her life was marked by compassion, service, and unwavering devotion to her family.
