Marie P. Chambers
January 1, 1927— March 4, 2026
Wilmington, DE
Marie P. Chambers was born on January 1, 1927, in Northeast, Maryland, to Charles and Sarah Harvey. She moved to Wilmington, Delaware, as an infant, where she attended Saint Joseph’s Catholic School and later Wilmington Public Schools. At the age of 12, she was baptized at Rock of Ages Church alongside her future husband, George N. Chambers, Sr., in a creek on Meadowbrook Avenue in Belvedere.
Together, Marie and George raised six children: Delores, Doris, Diane, Dorothy, George, Jr., and Gregory. She later had two more children, Brenda and Michelle. In her mid-forties, she began working at Goodwill Industries, advancing to the role of manager and retiring in 1980. She took great satisfaction in her work, viewing her ability to connect with and serve others as a form of ministry.
Marie had a lifelong passion for fashion, especially hats and shoes, which filled her home with color and style. She lovingly documented her growing family through photographs of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren. As an only child, she placed deep importance on family bonds and cherished every generation.
A longtime and devoted member of Rock of Ages Missionary Baptist Church in Belvedere, Marie served faithfully as a Deaconess for many years. She enjoyed watching old cowboy movies, working on table games and word puzzles, and spending quiet time reading her Bible and Daily Bread.
Preceded in death by her husband, George, Sr., and their daughter, Doris, Marie is survived by her seven children, including son-in-law Rev. Linton Henderson, and more than 183 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren, along with many other relatives and friends.
