Marie Margueritte Carter
Topeka, KS
Marie Margueritte Carter, 93, of Topeka, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2026, at Celebration Villa. Born on April 3, 1932, in Vendoevre, France, to Henrie and Andre (Caperelle) Matinier, she grew up in Paris, where she attended high school and worked at the Waterman Pen Factory. It was there that she met Ulysses Carter while he was stationed in Evreux with the military. They married in Paris and shared a life together until his passing in 2003.
A devoted Catholic and longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marie found joy in gardening, spending time outdoors, and making the pilgrimage to Medjugorje in Bosnia with her church community. She loved traveling back to France to visit friends and family, and she cherished caring for her dogs and being with those she held dear. She worked as a seamstress for several Topeka clothing stores, including Ray Beers, Crosby’s Department Store, Macy’s, and Dillard’s.
She is survived by her son, Emmanuel Carter (Karen Hastert) of Topeka, and her nieces, Kim Hutchins and Kelly Hutchins of Marseille, France. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ulysses, and her siblings, Josef Matinier, Bernadette Hutchins, and Henrie Matinier.
