Margaret Bradford

Margaret Bradford, a cherished and trailblazing member of the Metropolis community, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, 8:10 p.m., at the Ray and Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center of Paducah, KY. Born on June 26, 1954, in Metropolis, IL, Margaret's life was a tapestry of strength, love, and dedication—a testament to her character and the profound impact she had on those around her.

A 1973 graduate of Metropolis High School, Margaret made history as the first black woman to work for the city of Metropolis, proudly serving the community for many years through her career with the Street Department before retiring. Her pioneering spirit and steadfast commitment broke barriers and paved the way for others, reflecting the strength and determination that defined her life.

Margaret was known for her straightforward nature; she spoke her mind with honesty and kindness. Beneath this forthright demeanor beat a heart of gold, ever ready to help anyone in need. She held a deep love for animals, wanting to make all of them her pets if she could have. Those who knew her will remember her meticulous yard, a reflection of her care and attentiveness to the world around her.

Her passions were many and spoke to a vibrant, full life. As an avid softball player, Margaret was a skilled outfielder and loved the camaraderie and thrill of the game. Fishing trips with her beloved son, Edgar, created treasured memories, woven with laughter and shared moments of peace. She had a zest for life that shone brightly at parties and cook-outs, where her talents as a good cook delighted friends and family alike. Margaret delighted in watching television shows such as "In the Heat of the Night," "Judge Mathis," and westerns, embracing every opportunity to unwind and enjoy her favorite stories. Notably, she was also an enthusiastic lottery player, always filled with hope and excitement.

Margaret leaves behind a loving family who mourn her loss while celebrating her incredible legacy. She is survived by Her Devoted Son, Edgar Bradford of Metropolis, IL; Her Treasured Granddaughter, Courtney Parker of Fayetteville, NC; and Her Cherished Grandson, Jayce Bradford of Marshall City, KY. Her Great-Granddaughter, Ava Parker of Fayetteville, NC, carries forward the warmth and love Margaret so generously gave. Her memory will be honored by Her Three Dear Brothers—Cameron Riley of Columbia, MO, Virgil Riley of Unionville, IL, and James Riley of Metropolis, IL—and Her Three Beloved Sisters—Sharon Goodman, Louise Riley, Brenda (Reverend Jackie) Meadows, all of Metropolis, IL.

Margaret’s extended family includes Two Special Nephews, Chris Smith of Metropolis, IL, and Cameron Riley of Paducah, KY, as well as Numerous Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and Friends who stood alongside her through life’s journey. She also leaves behind Three Caring Sisters-In-Law, Crystal (Lucas) Raye of Metropolis, IL, Janis Bradford of Belknap, IL and Clara Riley of Clute, TX.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Franklin S. Bradford; her parents, Willie Ben Riley and Alma Fitzpatrick Riley Lee; her grandson, Brenton Hooper; five sisters—Carolyn Riley, Mary Riley, Geraldine Turner, Linda Hodge, and Pearl Hodge—and three brothers, Hillary Riley, Clemar Riley, and Edgar Burns, whose memories remain entwined with hers forever.

Services to honor Margaret’s life will be held at Pettus Rowland Funeral Home, 1229 Madison Street, Paducah, KY 42001, on March 21, 2026. A visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 12:00 p.m. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Margaret are invited to celebrate her enduring spirit and the legacy of love she leaves behind.

Margaret Bradford’s journey was one of strength, warmth, and unyielding commitment to the people and passions she loved. Her story is etched in the hearts of those who knew her, a beautiful testament to a life well lived and a soul deeply loved. Her presence will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will forever illuminate the lives she touched.
