Manuel R. Sylvia

Manuel R. Sylvia

January 14, 1948 March 7, 2026

Nantucket, MA

Manuel "Manny" R. Sylvia Jr., 78, passed away peacefully at his home on March 7, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on January 14, 1948, at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, he was the youngest of three children and the only son of Manuel and Zelmira Sylvia. A 1967 graduate of Nantucket High School, Manny served in the Army and was stationed in Colorado, where he enjoyed photography and horseback riding in his free time. Known for his selflessness, he often volunteered to remain on base during holidays so that fellow servicemen with families could be home with their loved ones.

On June 14, 1975, Manny married Sarah "Sally" Bodman in a small ceremony at the First Congregational Church of Nantucket. Together they raised three children, who were the center of his world. He spoke of them and his grandchildren with endless pride and affection. A skilled carpenter and caretaker, Manny ran his own business while generously volunteering his talents at the family church and chaperoning his children on school trips to Washington, DC. He found his true professional calling with the Nantucket Historical Association, where he maintained historic buildings and sites across the island. He knew the Old Mill intimately and continued assisting there long after retirement.

A longtime member of the local Freemasons lodge, Manny took special joy in helping his son Justin prepare to become Worshipful Master, watching with deep pride as he served. Described by many as a salt-of-the-earth man, he freely shared his carpentry knowledge, believing woodworking to be a valuable but fading craft. In the evenings, he could often be found in his recliner with a Budweiser, sharing stories of days gone by with his family.

Manny was predeceased by his parents, Manuel and Zelmira Sylvia, and his sisters Helen Juliano and Margo Wiechens. He is survived by his wife Sally (Bodman) Sylvia, his son Justin Sylvia, and his daughters Danielle Ochoa and Celeste Ikolodo. He also leaves behind his sons-in-law David Ochoa and Wilfred Ikolodo, his grandchildren Nicolaus Ochoa, Lucas Ikolodo, Ofelia Ochoa, and Noelle Ikolodo, along with a brother-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews. A small celebration of his life is planned for the spring.
