Mainert Jordan "Sandy" Peterson Jr.

April 8, 1945 March 10, 2026

Vero Beach, FL

Mainert Jordan Peterson, Jr., affectionately known as Sandy, died peacefully on March 10, 2026, at Cleveland Clinic Hospital following a brief illness. He was 80 years old. Born in Trenton, New Jersey, on April 8, 1945, Sandy enjoyed a long and successful career at Fairfield Teachers’ Agency in Fairfield, Connecticut, where he worked for more than forty-five years as a headhunter for teachers and principals throughout the tri-state area, placing thousands of candidates. He spent his retirement happily with his wife in Vero Beach, Florida.

A gifted athlete from an early age, Sandy sang with the Saint Thomas Choir School in New York City and attended St. Mark’s Preparatory School in Southborough, Massachusetts. He went on to Yale University, where he set a freshman record in the standing broad jump, and later earned a B.S. in Physical Education from Springfield College and a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology from the University of Bridgeport. He was an All-American soccer player and a highly competitive 4.5 tennis player.

Sandy is survived by his wife of 35 years, Carol Lynn; his children Laurie, Matthew, and Lindsey (and her husband Jessie) from his first marriage to Leslie Dillon; and four grandchildren, Logan, Ethan, Jessie, and Memphis. He is also survived by his beloved cats, Charlie and Teddy, his siblings Ginny, Charlie, and Chrissy, and brother-in-law Dave Davis. He was predeceased by his parents, Virginia and Reverend Mainert Peterson.

In retirement, Sandy cultivated a deep love of nature photography, capturing thousands of images across Florida, especially at the T.M. Goodwin Wildfowl Management Area in Fellsmere, which he visited faithfully each Thursday. He and his wife were active in several environmental organizations, including the Pelican Island Preservation Society, where he served as the official photographer. A gentle man and true gentleman, Sandy lived by a strong moral code, remained an eternal optimist, and brought out the best in everyone around him. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, and steadfast friend who met life’s challenges with grace and kindness.
