M. Rex Pennington
May 17, 1937— March 7, 2026
Cambridge, OH
M. Rex Pennington, 88, of Cambridge, passed away peacefully at his home on March 7, 2026. Born on May 17, 1937, in Keokee, Virginia, to the late Ezra and Eliza Pennington, Rex lived a life rooted in hard work, family, and the outdoors.
He dedicated many years to Cambridge State Hospital, serving as a security guard in the hospital’s fire department before retiring. A longtime member of Mount Hermon Presbyterian Church, Rex also tended his farm and cared for his cattle with quiet pride. He was actively involved in 4-H with his children, faithfully attended the Guernsey County Fair, enjoyed hunting and playing softball, and enthusiastically supported his grandchildren at their sporting events. In retirement, he cherished drives to Amish country with his wife Kay, often ending with a good home-cooked meal, and looked forward to visiting with his lunch buddies at the Trail Family Diner in Cambridge.
Rex is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Kay (Lawrence) Pennington; his daughter, Melinda Warner; his son, Richard Pennington (Julie Urdak); and his daughter, Melissa (Aaron) Zamensky. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Bob Pennington of Keokee, Virginia, along with many beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Wayne Warner, and 12 brothers and sisters.
Rex and Kay were blessed to live in a neighborhood that felt like family, where he formed many lasting friendships. Those who knew him will long remember his gentle humor and the way he would shake his head and say, with a grin, “Gosh dog it! Who can see that little ball?” when watching lacrosse.
