August 9, 1937— March 14, 2026
Santa Rosa, NM
Lydia Chavez, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and devoted member of her community, passed away peacefully at her home on March 14, 2026, after a lengthy illness. Born on August 9, 1937, in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, she was the beloved daughter of the late Pablo and Eloisa (Fajardo) Romero.
Lydia spent her early years in Santa Rosa, where she attended school and began a life defined by warmth and quiet dedication. On June 6, 1957, she married Wilfred Chavez, beginning a partnership of more than six decades rooted in deep love and mutual respect. Together they raised a large family, instilling in their children the values of kindness and resilience.
She worked as a maid at the Tower Motel and as a waitress at Jack’s Cafe, bringing the same care and commitment to each role. Yet the time she treasured most was spent babysitting her grandchildren, where her loving nature and generous heart found their fullest expression. A faithful parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Lydia drew strength and comfort from her faith throughout her life.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Wilfred Chavez, and their children: Albert Chavez and his wife Susie; Ricky Chavez and his wife Joan; Polly Chavez; Bobby Chavez and his wife Frances; and Cordelia Chavez and her husband Dennis. She was the proud grandmother of twelve grandchildren, great-grandmother of twenty-six great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandmother of eight. She is also survived by her siblings Johnny Romero and his wife Fern, Toni Padilla, and Kathy Garcia and her husband Eddie. She was preceded in death by her parents, her great-granddaughter Andrea Chavez, and her siblings Pete Romero, Santiago Romero, Albert Lee Romero, and Sinforas Romero.
