Columbus, OH
Lula Mae Brown, a cherished member of the Columbus community, passed away on March 4, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on May 9, 1938, in Columbus, Ohio, she lived a life filled with love, laughter, and deep dedication to her family and friends.
Known for her unwavering compassion and vibrant personality, Lula had a unique ability to light up any room she entered, always ready with a joke and a positive outlook. Her directness and candid nature were among her most endearing qualities. She approached life with purpose and joy, proudly serving as a member of her church on the usher board and in the choir, where she was affectionately known as one of the “Golden Girls.”
Education was important to Lula. She graduated from Central High School in downtown Columbus, a foundation that supported her strong work ethic and commitment to lifelong learning. In her free time, she found joy in working puzzles, reading Stephen King novels, and taking walks around her neighborhood.
Family was at the heart of Lula’s world. She cherished family gatherings and particularly looked forward to Mother’s Day, which fell so close to her birthday, turning it into a double celebration. She delighted in playfully teasing her son Steve, often giving him a gentle bop on the head that reflected their warm and affectionate bond.
Lula is survived by her loving children, John Thomas, Alice Thomas, Faith Thomas, Steve Thomas, and David Thomas, along with twenty-two grandchildren and thirty-two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Louise Windom; her daughter, Mable Thomas; her sister, Gloria Love; and her brothers, Fred Junior Windom and Gilbert Windom. Her legacy of affection, resilience, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
