March 14, 1940 March 12, 2026

Lowell, MA

Luis F. Sousa, 85, of Lowell, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026, at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, surrounded by his family after a period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of the late Amelia M. (Ferreira) Sousa, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage before her passing in 2022.

Born on March 14, 1940, in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, Luis was the son of the late Raul de Sousa and the late Maria da Ascuncao (Patricio) de Sousa. He was raised and educated in Sao Miguel, where he worked in construction. In September 1993, he immigrated to the United States with his family and settled in Lowell. For approximately eight years, he worked as a baker at Old Mother Hubbard before retiring.

A devout Christian who prayed daily, Luis was a dedicated communicant of Trinity Episcopal Church in Milford. He found deep joy in time spent with his family, being outdoors, and tending to his grounds and gardens with great pride. A lifelong futebol enthusiast, he remained an ardent supporter of S.L. Benfica.

He is survived by his daughter, Cidalia Tavares and her husband Paulo of Lowell; his sons, Luis DeSousa of Fall River, Silvino DeSousa of Lowell, and Carlos DeSousa and his husband Pedro Hernandez of Milford; his grandchildren, Gary Tavares, Derek Tavares, Raquel DeSousa, Roberto DeSousa, Ruben DeSousa, Ronaldo DeSousa, Ashley DeSousa, Jordyn, Miguel and Erick Hernandez; and his sister, Diolinda Cordeiro of Sao Miguel. He was predeceased by his siblings, Antonio Sousa, Joao Sousa, Raul Sousa Jr., and Jose Sousa.
