Lucy Mills Deaton

November 15, 1941 March 7, 2026

Barbourville, KY

Mrs. Lucy Mills Deaton, 84, of Barbourville, passed away on March 7, 2026, with the same grace and quiet strength that defined her life. Born on November 15, 1941, in Mills, she was a devoted mother whose love formed the steady foundation for her three daughters, Brenda Daniels and Richard of Barbourville, Lori Stewart and Crit of Corbin, and Jessica Epperson and Dustin of London. To them, she was home, comfort, and an unwavering source of support through every season of life.

The greatest joy of Lucy’s life was her role as grandmother. Her five grandchildren—Nathan Carter, Jaden Stewart, Makenna Stewart, Evan Epperson, and her special pride and joy, Lexi Kate Epperson—brought constant sparkle to her days. She was also blessed in her final year with a bonus grandson, Jordan, who filled her heart with happiness and laughter. Her love for each of them was boundless, and she spoke of them with pride to everyone she met.

Lucy found delight in life’s simple pleasures. She loved shopping, especially poring over Saturday morning sale ads, and cherished her Friday night trips to Marshall’s with Lexi Kate, filled with laughter, sweet treats, and memories that will be treasured forever. She never met a dessert she didn’t love. A lifelong Christian, she lived her faith through quiet service, keeping a spotless home and caring for others with warmth and generosity. No one ever left her table hungry, and her smile could brighten the darkest day.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Deaton; her parents, Albert and Hester Mills; her brothers, Lewis Mills and wife Nina, Charles Mills and wife Doris, and J. C. Mills; her nephew, Doug Mills; and her cousin and dearest friend, Zelma Hubbard. She is survived by her sister, Pauline Miller and husband James of Davis Bend; her brothers, C. A. Mills and wife Jackie, and James David Mills and wife Judy, all of Barbourville; along with many cherished nieces and nephews. She also shared a treasured lifelong friendship with Terry Herb “Tim” of Anderson, Indiana, and held special cousins Kaye Carter and Jerri Sidel as close as sisters. For the past 15 months, Lucy faced dementia with courage, lovingly cared for by the compassionate staff at Shepherd’s Cove at Laurel Heights, who became like family to her and her loved ones.

Lucy was the perfect blend of kindness and strength, gentle yet resilient, with a heart of gold. Her legacy of faith, family, hard work, and unconditional love remains with all who knew her. Though deeply missed, she leaves behind a light that will continue to shine in the lives of her family.
