Norfolk, VA
Lowell Richard “Dick” Hershberger, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, entered into eternal rest on March 13, 2026. Born on July 22, 1941, in Pittsford, Michigan, Dick was a proud U.S. Navy veteran who served from 1960 to 1964 and a dedicated civil servant for more than 30 years. A self-described farm boy from Michigan, he was remembered by family and friends as a patriotic, hardworking, and compassionate man with an exceptional sense of humor and a deep appreciation for life’s simple joys.
Dick and his wife Jo-Ann shared a loving partnership of 29 years. They spent many happy hours working together in their flower gardens, where he kept the yard tidy and dug holes for her plants. The couple also enjoyed dancing, with Jo-Ann often admiring his impressive moves that filled their time with laughter and cherished memories. A gentle giant and proud grandfather to four grandsons, Dick was known for his kindness. He had a special fondness for butter pecan ice cream and treasured every moment spent with family and friends. An avid supporter of the University of Michigan Wolverines and the Washington Redskins, he was a devoted football fan.
An active outdoorsman, Dick was an avid golfer, skilled hunter, and fisherman. He took great pleasure in construction and carpentry, generously using his talents to improve his own home and those of his family members. A longtime resident of Ocean View for more than 65 years, he was a faithful parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and remained involved in his community as a Little League baseball coach, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3548, the Ocean View Democratic and Social Club, and the American Legion Post 327.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Mary Hershberger, and his first wife, Helen Julie (Seluga) Hershberger, who passed in 1991. He is survived by his loving wife, Jo-Ann (Popowski) Hershberger; his son, Kenneth Hershberger, and wife Charlene; Jo-Ann’s children, Karen Church and her husband James, and Matthew Kessler; his grandsons, Chandler Hershberger and his wife Maddy, Chase Hershberger, Noah Church, and Braeden Kessler; his brother, Donald Hershberger, and wife Mary Anne; his sister, Kathy Abbott; and many nieces and nephews. His warm spirit, dedication to family, and passion for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
