Louise Winton (Forbes) Luring, born on May 5, 1940, in Orange, New Jersey, to George and Marian (Holbrook) Forbes, passed away on March 10, 2026. A graduate of Bound Brook High School, Tufts University, and the School for International Training, she first discovered her deep affection for Mexico while studying there during college, a passion that remained with her throughout her life.
In 1970, she married William Luring, whom she met while both worked for The Experiment in International Living. Together they built a life centered on service, education, and community. Louise taught Spanish and held a variety of roles, including travel agent, newspaper reporter, and owner of a small guest house. Deeply engaged in her community, she served for 25 years on the board of trustees of the Village of Saxtons River and remained actively involved in numerous local organizations. A lifelong Girl Scout and a 50-year member of the American Association of University Women, she was steadfast in her commitment to the advancement of women and girls.
Some of her most meaningful experiences came through her volunteer work abroad, including building houses in Puebla, Mexico, alongside Jimmy Carter and Habitat for Humanity, participating in medical and dental missions to El Salvador, and joining a latrine-building project in Nicaragua with Road Scholar.
Louise was predeceased by her husband, William, in 2011, and by her sister, Gail Greaves. She is survived by her daughters, Elena Luring of Saxtons River and Marianna Luring (Garo Taft) of Brooklyn, New York; three grandchildren, Sophia Cardini, Jack Cardini, and Aram Taft; and her sister, Elizabeth Davis of Virginia. At her request, there will be no service.
