He was predeceased by: his parents, Reverend Lloyd James and Dottie Grace Cooper (Woodman); his wife Lida Elaine Cooper (Wayman); and his sisters, Bettie Lorane Holtman and Ellen Louise Young.

He is survived by: his daughters, Nancy Laine Hood of Texas and Cammy Jean Cooper of Newcomerstown; his grandchildren, Mallory Leigh Thompson, Grant Harley Slape, Lori Danielle Tyson (Tim), Katie Ann Miller (Kevin), Carrie Jean Gammeter (Todd) and Ashlee Irene Knable (Patrick); and his great grandchildren, Eliana Ann, Malachi Clarence, Isaac Christian Miller, Titus James, Rose Carolyn, Eli Samuel Tyson, Ellis Patrick, Mera Irene, Isla Jane Knable, Keenan Edward and Isabella Beck Gammeter.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 12th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Addy Funeral Home (406 W State St, Newcomerstown, OH 43832). A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 12th 2026 at 1:00 PM at the same location. A burial will be held on Monday, March 16th 2026 at 1:00 PM at the Karoma Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions in Gene's honor may be made to the building fund at either the Stone Oak Cumberland Presbyterian Church (20024 Crescent Oaks, San Antonio, TX 78258) or First Baptist Church of Newcomerstown (135 S. River St. Newcomerstown, OH 43832).
