Lewis Leonard Schmitz passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 10, 2026, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was just shy of his 89th birthday.
Born on August 1, 1937, Lewis was the only son of Albert Otto Schmitz and Grace Terwilliger Schmitz. A man of deep faith, he lived with an enduring positivity, a profound love for his family, and a steadfast respect for his country. He greeted every inquiry about his well-being with an enthusiastic “Great!” or “Wonderful!”, firmly believing that a positive outlook led to a longer and happier life. Rather than saying goodbye, he preferred to part with the cheerful wish, “Have fun!”
Lewis was a longtime and active member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church, a former Marine, and Commander of the American Legion Post 149. He was also an engaged member of the Dinwiddie Diamonds. He took special pride in living long enough to see four generations of his family carrying on the Schmitz name.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Flexon Schmitz; his son Ron and wife Robin; his daughter Sharon and husband Ethan; stepsons Rob and Howard, and Howard’s wife Lori; grandson Conner and wife Chelsea; granddaughter Jennifer and husband Justin; step-grandson Austin and wife Kira; great-grandchildren Lauren, Peyton, and Griffin; and his sister, Lozetta.
