Leonard I. Krimerman
Willimantic, CT
Leonard I. Krimerman, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Connecticut, passed away on December 31, 2025. He died surrounded by the love of his wife, Marian L. Vitali D.C. Born in 1934 in New York City to Mina (Fields) and Samuel Krimerman, Len earned his B.A. from Cornell University in 1955 and his Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1964. He taught philosophy at Louisiana State University in New Orleans during the 1960s before joining the Philosophy Department at UCONN in 1968, where he remained for the rest of his academic career.
Deeply committed to social and economic justice, human dignity, and democratic participation, Len believed in the ability of people from all backgrounds to shape their own education, workplaces, and communities. He pioneered innovative approaches to education that emphasized self-directed learning and community engagement, always seeking to connect theory with practice. A central figure in the worker cooperative movement, he helped establish numerous local cooperatives and alternative economic initiatives, particularly in the Willimantic, Connecticut area, including the Willimantic Food Co-op, the Swift Waters Artisans Cooperative, and the International Poultry Cooperative. Nationally and internationally, he founded organizations and publications to advance worker democracy and grassroots economic cooperation, while forming many enduring friendships along the way.
Len is survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Phillip and Valerie F. Vitali, and Paul Vitali and Paige Fordice, as well as many dear cousins, nieces, a nephew, and grand-nieces. He will be remembered for his pioneering spirit, his big smile, and his hopeful belief in our collective capacity to create positive social change.
