Leon W. Thornton, Sr. passed away on March 5, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on July 29, 1939, in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, to Arthur Thornton and Virginia Lynch, Leon was known for his remarkable ability to fix anything, his big personality, and his unwavering dedication to his family. He possessed a strong presence, a generous heart, and a gift for making those around him feel supported and cared for.

He served more than 15 years as Lead Engineer at The Jefferson Hotel, where his work ethic, skill, and leadership earned him the lasting respect of colleagues and friends. Outside of work, Leon found joy in repairing and building things, offering his advice and wisdom to anyone who needed guidance, and nurturing lifelong friendships. If something was broken, Leon could fix it, and if someone needed encouragement, he was there.

Above all, Leon cherished his family. He was a loving husband to Pauline Thornton, sharing over 50 years of marriage with her before her passing. Their union was built on love and strength.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Thornton, his son, Franklin Dale Hill, and his siblings James Howard Thornton, Arthur Thornton, Eugene Thornton, Eula Satterwhite, and Elton Thornton. Leon is survived by his children Leon W. Thornton, Jr. (Fern), Sheila Mae Thornton, Brandon Leon Hill, Andre J. Thornton (Phyllis), and Tangileaq Ly’onna Russell (Eric Nixon); his sister, Marie Bagley; and his cherished grandchildren Danielle Thornton, Lakeisha Thornton, Deon Thornton, Demond Thornton, Thomas Henderson, Leon Thornton III, Courtney Reddick, Taylor Thornton, Keon Thornton, Tiondra Thornton, Ryan Graves, Andre Thornton Jr., Fiona Hill, DJ Hill, April Hill, and Theia Nixon, along with his great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. He shared special lifelong friendships with Tony Witcher and Sean Kearney. Leon’s love, laughter, wisdom, and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
