November 13, 1942— March 15, 2026
Appleton, WI
Lawrence C. Silton, a dedicated tax lawyer, respected author, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully at Aviva Senior Living in Sarasota, Florida, surrounded by his loving wife and three children.
Born in Chicago in 1942, the only child of Herbert and Ruth Silton, Larry grew up with a strong Midwestern work ethic that shaped his distinguished career. He earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan in 1964 and a law degree from Northwestern University in 1967. Licensed to practice law in Illinois since 1967 and in Wisconsin since 1973, he was also a certified public accountant. For more than four decades, he was a partner at Silton Seifert Carlson S.C. in Appleton, Wisconsin, where he guided the firm’s corporate, tax, and business practice. He counseled clients on business succession planning, tax strategies, and acquisitions, and served as an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Graduate Business School and a lecturer at Fox Valley Technical College. Larry was the author of two influential books, How to Buy or Sell the Closely-Held Corporation (Prentice Hall, 1987) and Taking Cash Out of the Closely-Held Corporation: Tax Opportunities, Strategies, and Techniques (Prentice Hall, 1988).
Above all, Larry cherished his 59-year marriage to his beloved wife, Susan (Sue), his confidante, co-adventurer, and bridge partner. Together they traveled the world, visiting places such as Machu Picchu, Romania, Scotland, and New Zealand. He was deeply devoted to his family, enjoyed fishing, and remained an avid sportsman who eagerly joined games of tennis, racquetball, or basketball. For more than 35 years he looked forward to annual Canadian fishing trips with his sons, later sharing these traditions with his grandsons and in-laws, creating cherished memories and strengthening family bonds across generations.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Ruth Silton, his in-laws, Harold and Aileen Baum, and his son-in-law, Scott Spencer. Larry is survived by his wife, Sue Silton; his three children, Steven (Heidi), Sara (partner, Tony), and D.J. (Rebecca); and his six grandchildren, Madeline, Peter, William, Jack, Eli, and Abbie. His wisdom, warmth, unwavering loyalty, and profound love for those closest to him will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
