September 14, 1931— March 6, 2026
Sacramento, CA
Laurice Abou Bechara passed away on March 6, 2026 at the age of 95. Born on September 14, 1930, officially recorded in 1931, in Damascus, Syria, to Nicholas and Marie Zahlaoui, she was raised with a strong foundation of faith and deep love for family that guided her throughout her life.
After losing her mother at the age of 12, Laurice was greatly influenced by her older sister Eugenie and grew into a poised and elegant young woman. She married Nammour at the age of 15 and moved with him to Zahle, Lebanon, where they built a life together and raised five children rooted in perseverance, faith, and devotion. She endured the profound loss of her oldest son Fares when he was 17, yet her strong Catholic faith and belief in the resurrection helped sustain her as she continued to support her family.
In 1978, amid the war in Lebanon, Laurice and her family immigrated to Sacramento. There she exemplified resilience, learning English, learning to drive, and doing all she could to care for herself and her household. Her husband Nammour passed away in 2001, after which she remained devoted to her faith, finding daily comfort in prayer and attending Mass while entrusting her family to God’s care. She was a strong supporter of the founding of the Maronite Catholic Community in Sacramento, which became Our Lady of the Rosary Maronite Catholic Church.
Laurice will be remembered for her kindness, humility, and generous heart. She had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcomed and cherished, often expressing her love through the meals she prepared in her kitchen. She found joy in cooking traditional family recipes, sewing clothes for her loved ones, and spending time with her children and grandchildren, who were the greatest treasures of her life. She is lovingly remembered by her children, seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, extended family, and many dear friends whose lives were touched by her gentle presence.
