Laura Katherine Sowder, known affectionately as Kathy to her family and L.K. to her colleagues, passed away on March 11, 2026, at Villaspring Nursing Home in Erlander, Kentucky. Born on January 5, 1953, in Williamstown, Kentucky, to Mary Frances (Vallandingham) and Cannon Sowder, she graduated from Grant County High School and Morehead State University. She enjoyed a long career with the Internal Revenue Service before retiring.
A woman of quiet faith, Kathy was baptized at Grassy Run Baptist Church and remained devoted to her beliefs throughout her life. She found great joy in caring for her many pets, especially her beloved cats and dogs, and took pleasure in preparing special dishes for holidays and work gatherings. Her thoughtfulness and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on those who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cannon and Frances Sowder. Kathy is survived by her brothers, Joseph “Joe” Sowder and his wife Pamela, and Gerald “Jerry” Sowder, as well as her nieces and nephews: Jay (Lisa) Sowder, Teasha (Brett) Seitz, Charity (Kevin) Moeller, and Elizabeth (Dewayne) Tatum. She will also be remembered fondly by her cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends.
