September 12, 1949— March 10, 2026
Bowling Green, KY
Larry G. Atkinson, Sr., 76, of Bowling Green, passed peacefully on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at his residence.
Born to the late Eugene Atkinson and Margaret Davenport Humes, Larry was preceded in death by his brother Danny Atkinson and stepfather Bert Humes. He graduated from Olmstead High School and attended Cumberland College in Lebanon, Tennessee. From 1969 to 1972, he served in the United States Army as a Sergeant E-5 and radio operator. Baptized in 1963 at Forest Grove Baptist Church in Adairville, Kentucky, he remained a faithful member of Oakland Baptist Church in Oakland, Kentucky.
For nearly fifty years, Larry worked as a farm manager, raising tobacco, row crops, and cattle. He took special pride in developing the registered Angus herd for Thorn Valley Angus. He cherished his 54-and-a-half-year marriage to his beloved wife Nora and found great joy in attending and supporting his grandchildren at their many events. He loved watching golf, sharing soft peppermints known to the family as “Papa Mints,” and embracing life with laughter and warmth. His family was his greatest source of pride and joy.
He is survived by his wife, Nora Welch Atkinson; three sons, Charles Atkinson, Larry Atkinson, Jr. (Janay), and Jeremy Atkinson (Lisa); thirteen grandchildren, Hannah Atkinson, Bradley Atkinson, Rachel Atkinson, Chesney Atkinson, Charlie Atkinson, Evan Atkinson, Easton Atkinson, Sawyer Atkinson, Rye Atkinson, Matilda Atkinson, Walker Atkinson, Dallie Atkinson, and Ruby Atkinson; three sisters, Terry Henderson (Frankie), Tammy Vineyard, and Penny Edwards (Jeff); sisters- and brothers-in-law, Pat and Bonnie Conlon and Chris and Jill Willis; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and one great-great-niece.
