Lewiston, ID
Larry Ray Ballantyne was born on February 11, 1942, to Robert James “Jim” Ballantyne and Blanche Alberta (Larson) Ballantyne. He passed away on March 9, 2026, in Lewiston, Idaho.
Larry grew up in Fairfield, Montana, with his parents and younger brother, Norman. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1960, later earning a bachelor’s degree from the College of Great Falls and a master’s degree from San Jose State University. In 1962 he married Gayla Young, and together they raised two daughters, Lisa (Ballantyne) Stoddard and Lynn Ballantyne.
A gifted and compassionate educator, Larry taught junior high and high school before finishing his career as a high school administrator. He cared deeply for students from every background and took special interest in teaching Montana History, often turning family vacations into educational road trips across the state. Though his teenage daughters did not always share his enthusiasm at the time, those journeys became cherished memories.
Larry was also a skilled carpenter whose work was known for its strength and meticulous detail. Whether building toys, furniture, or entire houses, he crafted pieces meant to last a lifetime. Above all, he was a loving, kind man with a servant’s heart who showed up for his family, friends, and community whenever help was needed. In his later years he delighted in attending his granddaughters’ concerts, ball games, and life events. He is survived by his wife Gayla, daughters Lisa and Lynn, son-in-law Troy, granddaughters Laryn (Jesse) and Madison (Fili), and great-granddaughters Marlee and Sosefina, who brought him special joy in his final year.
