Kerry “Sam” Newbanks Sr., age 79, of Carroll, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2026 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Sam was born on April 29, 1946 in Lake City, Iowa, the son of John Phillip and Helen Irene (Fielding) Newbanks. He grew up in Lohrville, where he graduated from high school in 1964. He served four years in the United States Air Force before returning to Iowa. On February 8, 1969, he married Nola Humm at the Christian Church in Lohrville. The couple made their home in Carroll, where they raised their two children, Kerry Jr. and Stacy.

Sam worked at Napa Auto Parts before beginning a 23-year career with Crouse Cartage. After the company closed, he went to work for O’Halloran International and retired in 2016. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carroll.

He is survived by his wife Nola of Carroll; his children and their families: Kerry Newbanks Jr. of Ames and Stacy DeYoung (David) of Halbur; four grandchildren: Samantha Corona (Luis), Jordan Newbanks (Karlee Godbey), Bailey Caldwell (Gabe), and Chase DeYoung; a sister Roxie Rapino (David) of Oklahoma; a brother John Newbanks of California; two sisters-in-law Elsie Armstrong (Lewis) of Missouri and Twila Beckman (Larry) of Carroll; and several nieces and nephews. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Harold and Beulah Humm, and a sister Peggy Newbanks.
