Keith Edward Carpenter

August 19, 1956 March 7, 2026

Alexandria, VA

Keith Edward Carpenter of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away on March 7, 2026. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jennifer Carpenter; his children, Christopher, Patrick, and Catherine; his sister, Mary Gavigan of Lovettsville, Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved cats, Duncan (“Chonk”), Guinness, and Cash. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Marianne Carpenter, and his sister, Ines Carpenter.

Born in New York City on August 19, 1956, Keith spent his childhood as a Navy brat, living in Japan, the Panama Canal Zone, and Virginia Beach before his family settled in Herndon, Virginia, where he graduated from Herndon High School. He earned a B.A. from Columbia University, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, in 1978 and a J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1984. He served with distinction at the Securities and Exchange Commission for 35 years before retiring in 2023.

Keith met Jennifer at an event at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in November 1996. Though he missed his chance to ask her out that night, they reconnected in May 1997, and he did not let the opportunity slip away again. They married on September 1, 2001. He cherished music, literature, the beach, and classic television shows in the spirit of The Andy Griffith Show. In retirement, though declining health prevented him from becoming a teacher as he had hoped, he continued to serve others as a dedicated member of the Monday morning collection-sorting team at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, his longtime parish.
