Trenton, NJ
Kayla Sonya Burnett was born on June 15, 2001, to Shawn Burnett and Kakeya Floyd, in Bristol, Pennsylvania, at Lower Bucks Medical Center. She passed away on March 4, 2026, at Capital Health Helene Fuld, surrounded by her family.
Kayla graduated from Notre Dame High School in 2019 and earned a BA in Business Administration from Centenary University in 2024. From an early age, she immersed herself in sports, beginning with gymnastics at three and flag football at seven. Her deep love for basketball led her to play for Ewing recreational teams, including Ewing Rec, Ewing Ballers, and the AAU Travel Team. She continued playing through Fisher Middle School, high school, and college, excelling as a point guard. At Notre Dame, she started on the varsity team all four years. As a freshman at Centenary University, she stood out for the Cyclones Women’s Basketball Team, leading with 67 assists in the 2019-2020 season and setting a single-game record of 15 assists against Rosemont on January 22, 2020. She also coached second-grade basketball at Antheil Elementary School.
Baptized in 2013, Kayla was a member of the First Baptist Church of Eggerts Crossing. In her professional life, she cared for individuals unable to care for themselves. She was known for her kindness, compassion, and ability to listen deeply. Kayla cherished traveling, spending time with friends, and bringing laughter to those around her. Fun-loving, caring, and energetic, she possessed an infectious spirit that brightened every room. Her favorite phrase was “GTM” (Get the Money!).
She was predeceased by her maternal grandmother Sonya Floyd Sanders, maternal grandfather Donnell Sanders, Sr., and paternal great-grandparents William and Shirley Burnett. Kayla is survived by her parents Shawn Burnett and Kakeya Floyd, step-parents Janet Burnett and Marlin Blackwell, sisters Malia Burnett, Jasmine Murrill, and Julianna Murrill, brother Trey Murrill (Jennifer), two step-brothers, special niece Arianna Croom, her maternal grandfather, five paternal grandparents, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
