Kathleen McEniry ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Cargain Funeral Homes Inc. - Carmel on Mar. 15, 2026.Kathleen (O'Meara) McEniry, 86, left us on March 15, 2026, and has gone to her final resting place with God. We will immensely miss her, though we are grateful for the happy memories we all shared with her – and we are relieved that she is now resting in peace.Kathleen was born and raised in Yonkers, NY, the sixth of eight children from parents George and Margaret O'Meara. She graduated from Sacred Heart Grade School and then from Sacred Heart High School. Her first job was working at Woolworth's in The Square during the '60s. Her side job was trying to get a word in at the O'Meara household where Herbert, Claire, George, Joseph, Peggy, Fran, and Mary Ann all shared space at their place on Lake Avenue.Kathleen loved sports, both as a participant and a spectator. Unfortunately, like so many poor souls before her, the teams she passionately rooted for – the Jets and the Mets – didn't give her much to cheer for over the years. Still, she never wavered in her fanship. Where she most loved to compete was on the softball field, particularly for the Yonkers based Emerald Isle team, where she was "E4" (second base) for more than a decade. In that decade plus, she turned many double plays, stretched singles into doubles, and didn't mind sliding head-first.Kathleen's two greatest titles she held were Mom and Grandma. Her son, Joe, always had a loud cheerleader at his various sports events, especially high school basketball. Kathleen would always sit hunched forward, yelling encouragement, and ringing her famous cowbell. Joe's friends always had an open invite to come over, and she treated his friends like they were family (except when the John McDonald's were eating her cherished Entenmann's Chocolate Frosted Donuts). Joe was always the sole apple of her eye … until her three grandchildren (Joseph, Alyssa, Brady) came along. She adored them and could talk for days about how much she loved each one of them. She was so proud of the family that Joe and Tammy had built.A lifelong resident of Yonkers – a place she was proud to say she was from – Kathleen worked at the Nutrition Center at Sacred Heart Church, then the North Yonkers Preservation Center, and finally at City Hall. Her customer service was first-rate, as all visitors to the office would end up smiling after a short talk with Kathleen. Her ability to multitask was impressive: all at once, she could make an irate caller forget his anger, help a colleague rectify a mistake, direct a lost person to the right department, and sneak in a cigarette drag (usually a Kool) without anyone knowing (most of the time). She retired from the City of Yonkers with adoration from so many colleagues. For the past ten years, she lived in Carmel, NY, faithfully attending St. James the Apostle Catholic Church and with the same devotion going to Salon 782 to get her hair done up. She always had an excess amount of Brisk Iced Tea and Crumb Buns in the house. She spent a good deal of time in Carmel with her youngest sister and best friend, Mary Ann, and was able to be much closer to her son's family.Kathleen was a loving mother, admired mother-in-law, generous grandmother, supportive sister, cherished aunt, beloved colleague, and treasured teammate. She is predeceased by her husband and friend, Joseph McEniry Sr., her parents, and all but one of her siblings. She is survived by: her son, Joe; her daughter-in-law, Tammy; her grandkids, Joseph, Alyssa, and Brady; her sister, Mary Ann Thomas; her many nieces and nephews; the sad contingent of Mets and Jets fans out there.Wherever you are when you read this, enjoy a Brisk Iced Tea and an Entenmann's Chocolate Frosted Donut for Kathleen …… and whenever you hear a cowbell, think of her.Visitation will take place on Thursday, March 19, 2026 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cargain Funeral Home, 10 Fowler Avenue, Carmel, NY.A Mass of Christian Burial to honor Kathleen's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026 at St. James the Apostle Church, 14 Gleneida Avenue, Carmel, NY.Private cremation to follow.Funeral arrangements entrusted to Cargain Funeral Home, 10 Fowler Avenue, Carmel, NY 10512, 845-225-3672, www.cargainfuneralhomes.com.We at Cargain Funeral Home are deeply committed to responsibly responding to the health, well-being, and needs of the families, guests and communities we are privileged to serve. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
