January 21, 1939— March 5, 2026
Bath, ME
Katherine Barter passed away on March 5, 2026 after a six-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born on January 21, 1939 in Bath, Maine, where she lived most of her life before moving to Brunswick following her retirement. Katherine was predeceased by her parents, Reginald Barter and Louise (Oliver) Barter, and her three older siblings, William Barter, Reginald “Pete” Barter, and Roberta Savage. She is survived by her nieces Charlene Savage of Bath and Judith Barter of Monmouth, her nephews Michael Barter of Peaks Island and his wife Ann, and William Barter of Brunswick and his husband Roy, as well as several grandnephews and grandnieces.
Katherine graduated from Morse High School in 1957 and began her career with banking and accounting positions in Bath. In 1965 she joined Bath Savings Institution as a teller, advancing over 42 years to the position of comptroller, where she served as an accountant until her retirement in 2007. She was an active member of the Maine Women Bankers’ Association, working to promote gender equality in managerial banking positions.
A lifelong member of the Bath United Methodist Church, Katherine served for many years as its financial secretary. She gave generously of her time and talent through the church and other organizations, staffing soup kitchens and food banks, volunteering with the D.A.R.E. program, supporting Equality Maine’s 2012 Marriage Equality campaign, and serving as treasurer of the Bath High School Alumni Association.
Katherine was a longtime member of the Bath Area Senior Citizens Activity Center and embraced every travel opportunity it offered. She particularly enjoyed casinos and realized a longtime dream with a post-retirement trip to Las Vegas. An avid Internet gamer, she also shared many travel adventures with her sister-in-law and best friend, the late Cindy Barter. A devoted animal lover, she spoiled her own pets and those of family members while generously supporting humane societies and other charitable causes. In her final years she resided at Hawthorne House in Freeport, where, even with Alzheimer’s, she continued to share stories and her sense of humor with staff and residents alike. Her family remains deeply grateful for the compassionate care she received there.
